  • A Guide to Vinyl Deck Installation on Your Home

Redoing the vinyl decking on your home is a project that can transform your outdoor space. In this blog post, we'll walk you through some of the process of installing a new vinyl membrane. Preparation: The first step in the installation process is to prepare the area by removing any existing materials. This may include dismantling old railings, removing old vinyl decking, and inspecting the underlying plywood for any signs of rot or damage. If rotten plywood is discovered, it will need to be replaced to ensure a solid foundation for the new vinyl decking. Surface Preparation: Once the old materials have been removed and any necessary repairs have been made, the plywood surface is sanded to create an even base for the vinyl decking. This step is essential for ensuring a smooth feeling finish. This process does not change the slope of the deck. Vinyl lays to the contour of the surface below. If you have puddling or slope issues this requires a further conversation.  Installation of Drip Edge Flashing: Next, drip edge flashing is installed around the perimeter of the deck to provide proper termination for the vinyl decking, it also continues the envelope of the deck covering over the facia board below. Our standard flashing runs down 2.5 inches. A helpful tip is to add a 1”x2” to the perimeter of the deck. This kicks out the flashing further away from the fascia below preventing dripping water from hitting the fascia.  Filling Cracks and Small Deficiencies: Before laying the vinyl decking, any small cracks or imperfections in the plywood surface are filled. This step helps to create a smooth surface for the vinyl. Laying Vinyl: With the preparation work complete, it's time to lay the vinyl decking. The vinyl sheets are carefully measured, ordered and cut to fit the dimensions of the deck. The vinyl is then glued down to the plywood surface. View our vinyl swatch options here! Seaming Vinyl: When installing vinyl decking, seams are crucial for ensuring a watertight seal where sheets of vinyl overlap. These seams are carefully welded or vulcanized to create a strong and durable bond. Typically, the overlap between sheets is 3/4 of an inch, and given that vinyl comes in 6-foot-wide widths, you'll notice a seam approximately every 6 feet, depending on the orientation of the vinyl on the deck. Caulking and Finishing Touches: After the vinyl decking is welded, any necessary caulking is applied to seal exposed or vulnerable areas. preventing water penetration and ensuring a waterproof seal. This can include the termination points on the end of the deck or under a door., Additionally, clip is installed on the drip edge flashing to provide a finished look and added protection preventing the vinyl from curling up. Final Inspection: Once the installation is complete, a final lookover is done to ensure that no items were missed and that the deck meets our quality standards. Any remaining debris or materials are cleared away, leaving behind a clean and beautiful vinyl deck ready for enjoyment. You can read reviews from our many happy customers here! With its advantages over traditional decking materials, vinyl decking offers benefits that make it an ideal option in our region. In this blog post, we'll explore the advantages of vinyl decking and why it's a practical choice for your outdoor space. Durability: Vinyl decking is renowned for its exceptional durability, making it well-suited for outdoor applications. Unlike wood, vinyl decking is resistant to rot, mold, mildew, and insect damage, ensuring long-lasting performance even in harsh weather conditions. This durability translates to minimal maintenance requirements, saving homeowners time and effort in upkeep. Low Maintenance: One of the primary advantages of vinyl decking is its low-maintenance nature. Unlike wood decking, which requires regular staining, sealing, and sanding to maintain its appearance and integrity, vinyl decking only requires occasional cleaning with soap and water to keep it looking pristine. This hassle-free maintenance routine makes vinyl decking an attractive option for busy homeowners who want to spend more time enjoying their outdoor space and less time on upkeep. Versatility: Vinyl decking comes in a variety of colors, allowing homeowners to customize their outdoor space to suit their personal tastes and aesthetic preferences. Whether you prefer the look of natural wood or a more contemporary design, vinyl decking offers possibilities for creating a unique and inviting outdoor oasis. Additionally, vinyl decking can be easily complemented with accessories such as railings, lighting, and outdoor furniture to further enhance its visual appeal and functionality. Weather Resistance: Vinyl decking is engineered to withstand the elements our region exposes it to, making it an ideal choice for outdoor environments exposed to sun, rain, snow, and humidity. Unlike wood decking, which is prone to warping, splintering, and fading when exposed to moisture, vinyl decking maintains moves with the wood below it while not cracking and maintaining its water proofing. In conclusion, vinyl decking is a practical choice for homeowners looking to enhance their outdoor space with a waterproof, low-maintenance decking solution. 1. You want a maintenance-free solution. Vinyl decks are a great solution to the weather we have in the Fraser Valley, BC. We get nice hot days in the summer, punctuated by heavy rain, light rain, and then we go into a long, rainy fall, winter, and spring. Vinyl decks are easy to clean! We recommend using low pressure water and a mild soap. Car wash soap works great as a detergent and using a push broom to scrub usually gets the job done. Click here for our FAQ page! 2. You want to be able to store things under your deck. The decks we install are roofing-grade, which means you will be able to store things underneath without worrying about water damage! This is vastly different from a wooden deck, which leaks, and is subject to rot after years of rainy weather. 3. You want the look of wood, without the maintenance of wood. We have many decking swatch options available! Click here to go to our swatches page. Deck swatches like Silver Maple and Boardwalk look a lot like wood, but won't give you splinters, or rot.
